The Falling Away

I have been praying for Christians who were once on fire for the Lord but seem to be languishing now. The Holy Spirit dropped into my mind

Matthew 24:10-13 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

As time progresses and life becomes more difficult for people, Christians will be occupied with making a living rather than looking to God. He says He will be our Source and Supply but in desperation, Christians will turn away from Him to make their own way. Bit by bit they will become lukewarm as their relationship with Jesus is allowed to drift.

Revelation 3:15-17 ‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit/vomit you out of My mouth.

Christians in my area love Bible/book studies but they won’t concern themselves with getting acquainted with the Author who is standing at their elbows waiting to be acknowledged!

Ephesians 3:19amp [that you may come] to know [practically, through personal experience] the love of Christ which far surpasses [mere] knowledge [without experience], that you may be filled up [throughout your being] to all the fullness of God [so that you may have the richest experience of God’s presence in your lives, completely filled and flooded with God Himself].

This is a precious verse that local Christians tell me is heresy! Knowing God as a real personality is heresy?!

I admonish you, my Christian brothers and sisters, stir yourselves because the day is coming to a close and darkness is settling on the earth. You may make yourself a prey, but whatever it costs to follow Jesus passionately will be well worth the cost. You will be thankful for all eternity.

Isaiah 59:15 Truth is nowhere to be found, and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey.

Becoming obsessed with anything that takes one’s mind off Jesus is a danger to the sincere Christian. That could be Covid-19 currently. Take every thought captive to the obedience of Jesus and let Him be your shelter. A distracted and fearful person will find focusing on Jesus difficult. A good way of focusing on intimacy with Jesus is to sing to the Lord, or read the Psalms aloud to Him. Take a look at Psalm 91 and the profusion of promises the Lord gives us, His little children.

Psalm 91
1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the dragon;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”

God's promises are awesome - IF you believe them and trust Him!!!

Thoughts Sparked by Psalm 37

1 Do not fret because of those who are evil
    or be envious of those who do wrong;
2 for like the grass they will soon wither,
    like green plants they will soon die away.

3 Trust in the Lord and do good;
    dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Philippians 4:19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

I have trusted Jesus for many years to supply all my needs and many of my wants. I chose to not marry to be free of domestic responsibilities to follow God, thus I went to China without support. All my needs were met. But when I came home to retire, I had no retirement. Eventually I got a stipend from Social Security of less than $300/month. I manage money well but that was a challenge! I have proven that God is trustworthy in every situation. Extra money comes when I need it but seldom from the place I expect it.

One of my favorite passages is Hebrews 13:5-6

5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,

“Never w”ill I leave you;
    never will I forsake you.”

6 So we say with confidence,

“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
    What can mere mortals do to me?

I know what it means to be totally without money and have no food in the house. That happened to me twice in China, and it has happened since I came home when I had a little food but not enough money to buy dish soap. But God promised so I continued to praise and worship Him gratefully. He is more precious to me than food and clean water!

5 Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him and he will do this:
6 He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
    your vindication like the noonday sun.

I have recieved three phone calls and one letter from government agencies urging me to get a Covid-19 vaccine. Slowly the wisdom of my refusal is being confirmed. The danger hasn’t passed, however, because now shedding is a serious danger to the unvaccinated. But God knew what was going to transpire many years ago and He promised in Mark 16:17-18 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

Drinking any deadly thing in this passage can include anything that enters the body: bacteria, viruses, other dangerous substances. While teaching in China I prayed this passage as protection over myself and didn’t have the health issues other foreigners had. Now I am trusting Father God to keep me safe from man-made viruses, the chemical cocktails being touted as vaccines, and the shedding of manufactured proteins from the bodies of those who were unfortunate enough to accept a “vaccine” from the death cult.

7 Be still before the Lord
    and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
    when they carry out their wicked schemes.

8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;
    do not fret—it leads only to evil.
For those who are evil will be destroyed,

In His own time and His own way God will destroy evil doers. But our God is a God of love, and Jesus died for those who are desperately evil. We ALL have come short of God’s requirements so Jesus paid our debt. While God is keeping us safe, He is also visiting those who have been deceived by Satan during the night-time to call them to Himself.

    but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.

10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;
    though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land
    and enjoy peace and prosperity.

12 The wicked plot against the righteous
    and gnash their teeth at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
    for he knows their day is coming.

We all have free will to choose evil. There are many who will choose the lake of fire as described in the last book of the Bible, in spite of all God provided for them. Then He will laugh at their calamity.

14 The wicked draw the sword
    and bend the bow
to bring down the poor and needy,
    to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,
    and their bows will be broken.

16 Better the little that the righteous have
    than the wealth of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken,
    but the Lord upholds the righteous.

18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care,

Several months ago I had a desire to read the book of Jeremiah. Jeremiah was a young man when God called him to be a prophet to his people. They ridiculed him when he admonished them to go with their enemy to Babylon to live in safety and prosperity. Eventually, all those who refused died either by famine, disease, or the sword.

The circumstances here in my building were intolerable to me so I applied to move to an apartment complex that was under a different administration with different rules which were not enforced. Those who knew me were not pleased with my decision but I was steadfast with confidence that I had heard my God. Then I heard the Holy Spirit say to me that my move was analogous to God’s admonition for the Jews to go with their captors to Babylon! I was surprised but confident in the Voice. Sometimes what He says seems contrary to “common sense” but His ways are always best.

    and their inheritance will endure forever.
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;
    in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

20 But the wicked will perish:
    Though the Lord’s enemies are like the flowers of the field,
    they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.

21 The wicked borrow and do not repay,
    but the righteous give generously;
22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land,
    but those he curses will be destroyed.

23 The Lord makes firm the steps
    of the one who delights in him;
24 though he may stumble, he will not fall,
    for the Lord upholds him with his hand.

25 I was young and now I am old,
    yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken
    or their children begging bread.

Conservative news is now warning of famine coming to the United States of America! With the two major pipelines feeding fuel to the heavily populated central, northern, and eastern states being shut down, the trucking industry will be forced to cease service. Fresh produce and other necessary food sources will be interrupted. People living in cities will not have space to grow a garden so they will need to find God as their Source and Supply. Many will die of starvation but those who trust their God will survive and thrive. Unfortunately many who say they are Christians will discover that they have been serving a god who cannot provide food during a famine.

God Will Laugh

Isaiah 59:15 So truth fails, and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.

Then the Lord saw it, and it displeased Him that there was no justice.

Psalm 2:2-4 The kings of the earth rise up,
And the rulers take counsel together,
Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces
And cast away Their cords from us.”

4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
The Lord shall hold them in derision.

Isaiah 59:15 has been on my mind for several months. I have prayed for those who are sincerely covenanted with the Lord that they would stay true to Him. As those who worship Satan are emboldened, believers are increasingly victimized. People are scandalized at the abuse of Christians, but eventually the abuse will become “old news”.

Another aspect of the abuse of authority and power is the unified desire to cast off God’s restrictions. They are not afraid of the almighty Creator-God and are plotting ways to over throw Him. But they seem to be unaware that He watches from the heavens and is laughing in derision at their utter foolishness.

Little children, do not be afraid. Our Holy One is more than enough to take care of our every need. After all, God is the creator of mankind and all cosmic beings, evil and good. He is exceedingly abundantly able to do all that we ask or even imagine and He is listening to each and every cry raised to Him.

Hebrews 13:5-6 Let your character [your moral essence, your inner nature] be free from the love of money [shun greed—be financially ethical], being content with what you have; for He has said, “I will never [under any circumstances] desert you [nor give you up nor leave you without support, nor will I in any degree leave you helpless], nor will I forsake or let you down or relax My hold on you [assuredly not]!” 6 So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently say,

“The Lord is my Helper [in time of need], I will not be afraid.
What will man do to me?”

The same ones who hated Jesus hate Jesus’ followers today. Rome and Jewish religious leaders hated Him then, and governments and religious leaders of today hate His followers.

Man can take one’s life but man cannot take one’s eternal rewa

Abraham’s Promised Son

God promised Abraham a son but Sarah was barren so she gave her husband her slave by which to have a son. God had to point out that He promised a son to Abraham through his wife, not through a slave woman. When Isaac was born Abraham continued to favor Ishmael and God had to emphasize to Abraham that Isaac was the promised son. Ishmael was a counterfeit. He was Abraham’s effort to help God fulfill His promise. God didn’t need any help, however. Finally, to remove the temptation to compromise, God commanded Abraham to cast out the slave woman and her son. As difficult as that was for Abraham, he obeyed. You can read the story in Genesis 16,17, 18.

We have Ishmaels in today’s religious system. The first twelve, including Paul, saw Jesus with their own eyes. They went where God told them to go; they were not invited.  And those places were not easy places to break fallow ground. Paul refused steadfastly to build on another man’s foundation. He refused to accept financial support and worked as a tent maker so that he wouldn’t be a financial burden on the people he came to serve. Tent makers were not high on the social scale but he used his time to teach about Jesus as he worked his trade.

The early apostles refused to compete. They refused to draw people away from their established places of worship. They simply taught who Jesus was and how He fulfilled the Old Testament prophesies. The early apostles were passionate in their efforts and not shy in their claims of the Gospel. Paul knew the law of his day and when he was jailed at Philippi he refused to leave quietly the morning after the earthquake opened the prison doors. Another seldom observed comparison of today’s apostles and prophets is that the early ones encouraged other believers’ gifts and abilities. The early apostles and prophets were the foundation of the church and in their lowly positions they urged and encouraged others to build up their giftings.

What do we observe in today’s apostles and prophets? We see men and women who unashamedly ask for support and make outrageous claims of blessings for those who give to their ministry. From personal experience I have found those blessings to be counterfeit. They want to be honored as the top of the heap. They like power and authority and give or refuse to give permission to those who are less prestigious to do things – even things that God has already spoken to those less prestigious ones.

I’ve been told that since the church I attended did not send me as a missionary, they could not support me. I don’t need anyone’s permission to obey God! I don’t care for religious retreats and seminars, but a couple of years ago a man I respect was to be speaking in a city near by, so I attended. During an open time for attendees to speak from the floor, a lady came forward to read a prophesy. To my horror the host pastor quickly stopped her and castigated her for ten minutes or so. I was deeply appalled at his humiliation of the woman. Their competition and arrogance sickened me. Even if the woman were wrong, the situation could have been handled graciously in public and then addressed in private later. The special speaker is coming to that church again this spring but I won’t be attending.

I believe it is appropriate to call these leaders Ishmaels. They are impostors. They do not have God’s heart for people and they do not wish to take the lowest position by doing the hard work of building a foundation for others to build on.

Today’s true church will exceed the early church in God’s poured out grace and glory but there will be some shuffling as people come into alignment with His supernatural government.

Balaam and Balak

Numbers 25

Israel settled down and remained in Shittim, and the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab,

2 Who invited the [Israelites] to the sacrifices of their gods, and [they] ate and bowed down to Moab’s gods.

3 So Israel joined himself to [the god] Baal of Peor. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.

4 And the Lord said to Moses, Take all the leaders or chiefs of the people, and hang them before the Lord in the sun [after killing them], that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.

5 And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Each one of you slay his men who joined themselves to Baal of Peor.

6 And behold, one of the Israelites came and brought to his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and of all the congregation of Israel while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting [over the divine judgment and the punishment].

7 And when Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand

8 And went after the man of Israel into the inner room and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her body. Then the [smiting] plague was stayed from the Israelites.

9 Nevertheless those who died in the [smiting] plague were 24,000.

10 And the Lord said to Moses,

11 Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the Israelites, in that he was jealous with My jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in My jealousy.

12 Therefore say, Behold, I give to Phinehas the priest My covenant of peace.

13 And he shall have it, and his descendants after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.

14 Now the man of Israel who was slain with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, a head of a father’s house among the Simeonites.

15 And the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi daughter of Zur; he was head of a father’s house in Midian.

16 And the Lord said to Moses,

17 Provoke hostilities with the Midianites and attack them,

18 For they harass you with their wiles with which they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.

The king of Midian, Balak, was afraid of the Israelites and wanted Balaam, a well-known fore-teller, to prophesy against Israel. God wouldn’t allow enchantment against His people and instead turned Balaam’s prophesies into foretelling of the coming Messiah. Balak was furious and sent Balaam away without rewarding him as promised.

Balaam wanted the promised money for bringing down Israel and suggested that the Midianite women could seduce the Jewish men and compromise their loyalty to the Israeli God. That plan worked very well indeed, and God in His outrage struck His people with a sudden contagious plague (“smitting plague”  in the King James).

Right in front of the weeping, praying elders gathered before the Tabernacle, a couple challenged the broken Jewish leaders and Moses. Phinehas, grandson of Aaron, grabbed up a javelin and killed both the Jewish man and the Midianite woman.

Already the Jewish leaders had put to death the defiled leaders who were involved with the Midianite women, but now Moses ordered the dead bodies to be hung up where all Israel could see God’s response to their unfaithfulness to Him. The parallel to our nation is striking!

2 Peter 2:12-19 Like unreasoning beasts, mere creatures of instinct, born [only] to be captured and destroyed, railing at things of which they are ignorant, they shall utterly perish in their [own] corruption [in their destroying they shall surely be destroyed],

13 Being destined to receive [punishment as] the reward of [their] unrighteousness [suffering wrong as the hire for their wrongdoing]. They count it a delight to revel in the daytime [living luxuriously and delicately]. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions and carousing together [even] as they feast with you.

  They have eyes full of harlotry, insatiable for sin. They beguile and bait and lure away unstable souls. Their hearts are trained in covetousness (lust, greed), [they are] children of a curse [exposed to cursing]!

15 Forsaking the straight road they have gone astray; they have followed the way of Balaam [the son] of Beor, who loved the reward of wickedness.

18 For uttering loud boasts of folly, they beguile and lure with lustful desires of the flesh those who are barely escaping from them who are wrongdoers.

19 They promise them liberty, when they themselves are the slaves of depravity and defilement—for by whatever anyone is made inferior or worse or is overcome, to that [person or thing] he is enslaved.

Look at verse 8 of Numbers 25. “Then the smitting plague was stayed from the Israelites.”

A smitting plague or pestilence is a contagious disease that comes suddenly. An example is the Bubonic plague that is presently threatening West Coast cities. Another example is the Wuhan Flu otherwise known as Covid-19. Have you noticed that children rarely get Covid-19. Have you wondered why?

My prayer is that God would use persons or events to provoke hostilities with our enemies, to purge them from our nation so that we can renew our vows of faithfulness to our God. If both Balak and Balaam were killed in the destruction of Midian, then surely judgment can be sought for those who attempt enchantments and divinations against the United States of America! But if America refuses to bow before the King of kings and the Lord of lords, our nation will suffer much for our pride and rebellion.

As an intercessor for nations, I like to pray from biblical events. Have you considered the Book of Esther? Putting this historical event into today’s culture, Esther and Mordecai would represent Christians (real ones!). Haman would represent the dedicated enemies of Christians, i.e. satanists, globalists, etc.

When Haman could no longer bear passing by Mordecai when he entered the king’s palace, he devised a plot to have Mordecai dishonored and put to death. Mordecai discovered the plot and appealed to Esther to come before the king in behalf of him and all Jews/Christians in the kingdom.

Esther and her maidens fasted three days before taking the risk of appearing before the king in behalf of the Jews/Christians. When she explained Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews/Christians, the king was outraged and allowed Esther and Mordecai to plan a response to the decree of the king to allow Jews/Christians to be killed. The king’s decrees could not be withdrawn, so there had to be a decree to allow the Jews/Christians to defend themselves. The hand of God visibly interposed to provide the Jews’/Christians’ deliverance.

The effect of the two antagonistic decrees was to raise a bloody war between the Jews/Christians and their enemies throughout the kingdom. The provincial governors were afraid of Mordecai and Esther and showed them favor. In today’s language we would say the fear of God fell on the people of the nation. The foundation of prayer and fasting enabled the Jews/Christians to have courage to resist evil and stand in defense of their faith in God. If they had been passive as most of today’s Christians are, they would have been destroyed! The fear of God is necessary if we are to honor God as our Lord.

Haman was hung on his own gallows and his sons, who had taken part in avenging their father’s fall, were killed during the Jews’/Christians’ defense. To expose the secret evil of Haman and his sons, the Jews/Christians hung their  dead bodies on gallows made for them, too. Plans made in secret will be shouted from the housetops (Luke 12:3). Thus Haman and his sons were exposed to public infamy. Future aggression was negated by this fear of God and His judgment for the persecution of His people.

Eventually Mordecai was exalted to the king’s next in line of authority. That is, the Jews/Christians took their rightful place as a major influence in the kingdom. Again, they were far from passive in their participation in their nation.

I see a couple of critical issues in this story. First of all, the Jews were not passive in their presence to honor and glorify their God and to respect the king. Secondly, they resisted evil; they did not submit to threats and real danger.

Judgment will begin at the House of the Lord (Ezekiel chapter 9). That is as true now as it was back then. We as professing Christians have been satisfied to hide and be free of responsibility, and today’s chaos is the result. We are to blame for America’s troubles. The antidote is the fear of God which must start with Christians before the unbelieving world will take note of our startling turn-around.

The world and the religious establishment hate Christians as much now as they did in Jesus’ day. They killed Jesus and they are attempting to wipe out Christianity today. Many Christians will deny their Lord and slip into hell, but there will always be a witness for Jesus because He is infinite. There is no wall high enough to shut Him out and there will be faith on the earth until He comes back to stop the clock. Why? Because He is able to keep that which true believers commit to Him. There is nothing too hard for Him. He is the infinite Creator God. Why should the Creator be afraid of what He has created? Satan wants to be lord, but he is only a created being. He will NEVER be lord. In fact, there is a Lake of Fire prepared for him and his minions. His apparent success is a mirage. Believe it!

One more comment: Jesus died for our enemies just as He died for those of us  who believe in Him. He has no desire to send anyone to hell. That’s why He created us with free will – so that we can choose Him freely. He willingly took the thief on the cross beside Him to Paradise when that thief asked to be remembered. So it is today – Jesus willingly forgives and rescues evil men and women who confess their sins and perversions and turn to a committed life with Him. Choose Jesus!

Sin Is A Shame to Any Nation

2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

This verse is familiar to church-going religious people. I don’t use the word “Christian” because the description given in this verse is not of Christians but of professing Christians.

Notice that these individuals are called by God’s name, but they are not humble. They are prayerless. They do not seek God’s face because their ways are wicked. These are individuals who lie and cheat. They approve of sexual perversion and even have laws protecting those who are sexually impure.

Romans 1:28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile

 to retain the knowledge of God,

so God gave them over to a depraved mind,

 so that they do what ought not to be done.

29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness,

 evil, greed and depravity.

They are full of envy, murder (abortion is murder),

strife, deceit and malice.

They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil;

they disobey their parents;

31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.

32. Although they know God’s righteous decree

that those who do such things deserve death,

they not only continue to do these very things

but also approve of those who practice them.

These professing Christians who want to condemn our political establishment (who rape little children and then kill them) while ignoring their own unrighteousness are hypocrites! That’s what Jesus called them. They existed in Jesus’ day, and they were the ones who saw to Jesus’ crucifixion. Jesus interfered with their power structure and sense of holiness. It was easy enough to remove Him as their Source of irritation. Just so has today’s religious establishment removed Jesus from their worship, and dishonor Him.

Ezekiel 22:30 I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for [the sake of] the land, that I would not destroy it, but I found no one [not even one].

God has no desire to destroy our land, our nation; but if He can’t find intercessors to stand before Him to defend the nation from His wrath, how can He not destroy it in His anger?! This call is not to those especially gifted. This call is for every born-again believer who loves this land enough to pray with fasting and tears for it’s defense by Almighty God the Creator of all things.

Isaiah 59:1 Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, that it cannot hear.

Let’s be about the Master’s business – His business is also our business. It’s up to us whether or not America is dragged out of the quagmire of filthiness and set on the Rock Christ Jesus. NOTHING is too hard for Him.

Praying for America

When praying for this nation, I like to look for precedents in the Scripture. Here is a good example of various situations in biblical cross-references: (

There is nothing to prevent a nation from invading another nation in today’s world. The fear of retaliation with stronger weapons of destruction or simply a greater population of available soldiers has previously been a deterrent to open conflict. But the untamed God is a God of power and indignation at aggression with violence and bloodshed, and He is vitally interested in the affairs of men.

Think about the situation when the Assyrian army had surrounded Jerusalem and the Jews were starving within the walls of their city. The Angel of the Lord came and slew the enemy army. The next morning the Jews were thrilled to plunder the enemy army for food and other necessities (II Kings 19:35; Isaiah 37:36). Think about God’s intervention for Israel in the Six Day War in 1967. God still works in behalf of His praying people, so let’s be motivated to pray earnestly for the survival of our own nation against our enemies. God is certainly able if we are willing to inconvenience ourselves in fasting and intercession. That will involve repentance and confession of our own sins first.

II Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Let us not deceive ourselves: we certainly have need to repent of our own wickedness before we ask God to defend us against our enemies!! For example, yesterday in the grocery store, the clerk that waited on me boldly  wore a rainbow mask. Sexual perversion. Do we not need to repent of our sins before asking almighty God to defend us from aggressors?

Exodus 14:13
But Moses told the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the Lord’s salvation, which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again.

2 Chronicles 15:2
So he went out to meet Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The LORD is with you when you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you, but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.

2 Chronicles 20:6-17
…16Tomorrow you are to march down against them. You will see them coming up the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the valley facing the Wilderness of Jeruel. 17You need not fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out and face them tomorrow, for the LORD is with you.’ ”18Then Jehoshaphat bowed face down, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down before the LORD to worship Him.…

2 Chronicles 32:8
With him is only an arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.” So the people were strengthened by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

The Old Testament Scriptures tell the stories of various battles in which God delivered the Israelites in different ways that only He was capable of. The nation of Israel was allowed to stand and see the battles won by their Lord, and not by the hand of man. Having God to fight for them was amazing. And while the whole nation was not pure, enough were faithful to their Creator-God that He jealously set the heavenly armies against Israel’s earthly foes.

So it is today. If we, the Lord’s, will turn from our wicked ways, honor and obey Him, we will see His miraculous deliverance from our many enemies. A superficial turning, superficial repentance, superficial obedience will not impress the all-knowing God. But a wholehearted, deep commitment will move Him in our behalf.

Hard Prayers

I’ve thought a lot about my friend’s apparent horror at the way I pray for professing Christians and their leaders as contrasted with those who do not know God. I mentioned to her Ezekiel 9 where God’s judgment began at the front of the temple where the old men sat. The old men represent the great wisdom of the religious system. But the Man with the ink horn also marked the children and the women. Did you know that even a child is known by his ways?

Proverbs 20:11 “Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.”

God hears the prayers that echo His own heart  that show oneness with Him. That’s why I pray according to Scripture. Here is a passage that concerns me for my own intercession or lack of it.

Ezekiel 22:30-31 And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.

31 Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord God.

An intercessor stands between God and the lost or compromised. That’s what Moses did. No wonder God loved Moses dearly! Just one person can make a difference in the life of a nation. That could be you or me! I take that seriously.

Psalm 82:5 [The magistrates and judges] know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in the darkness [of complacent satisfaction]; all the foundations of the earth [the fundamental principles upon which rests the administration of justice] are shaking.

Notice in this passage that the officials chose to not understand! They are satisfied with their darkness, so the support of the law is lacking and society has no solid foundation. This is scary because the lack of discipline or enforcement of law extends from the training of little children all the way to people of authority and responsibility.

Isaiah 26:9-11 My soul yearns for You [O Lord] in the night, yes, my spirit within me seeks You earnestly; for [only] when Your judgments are in the earth will the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God).

10 Though favor is shown to the wicked, yet they do not learn righteousness; in the land of uprightness they deal perversely and refuse to see the majesty of the Lord.

11 Though Your hand is lifted high to strike, Lord, they do not see it. Let them see Your zeal for Your people and be ashamed; yes, let the fire reserved for Your enemies consume them.

This last Scripture is graphic. It is plain. Is it not better to experience hardship that brings one to his knees than to enjoy pleasures during life only to be tormented in the lake of fire for eternity????

Matthew 18:8-9 And if your hand or your foot causes you to stumble and sin, cut it off and throw it away from you; it is better (more profitable and wholesome) for you to enter life maimed or lame than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into everlasting fire.

And if your eye causes you to stumble and sin, pluck it out and throw it away from you; it is better (more profitable and wholesome) for you to enter life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the hell (Gehenna) of fire.

This is Jesus’ teaching! He is trying to get His listeners to understand that eternal life is the most important thing in earthly life. Nothing else compares with living this life preparing for the next life, which is eternal! Do people listen? Only when life gets too hard and they need help.

Human mercy does not work God’s ways. Human mercy lacks God’s righteousness – His desire for holiness and purity. And His desire never changes. But He is passionate for those who desire Him with all of their hearts.

Revelation 3:16 So, because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of My mouth!

That word “spew” is actually “vomit” in the original – a very strong word. This is God talking and we had better be afraid of Him and His words. But, as already said, mankind will only listen when he is in a hard place.

I have asked the Holy Spirit if my prayers are too hard and I believe I’ve heard Him assure me that these Scriptures reflect His heart. Jesus loved the world so much He came as a Man to die to pay for mankind’s sin, individual by individual. He will not violate man’s will, but He will try to persuade stony hearts to repent and forsake their iniquities and perversions and turn to Him in a sacred, intimate relationship.

Genesis 2:7 Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

Ellicott’s Commentary for English Readers

“. . . breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.–The life came not as the result of man’s bodily organization, nor as derived by evolution from any other animal, but as a gift direct from God. And whatever superiority over other animals may be possessed by man comes from the manner in which this living breath was bestowed upon him, and not from his being “a living soul;” for that is common to all alike.”

According to Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

The part in each human that sets him apart from all other biological creatures is his spirit or pneuma. Psychology would call this the psyche. The psyche or spirit of man has a mind, will and emotions that can also connect with God.

The spirit is capable of possessing knowledge. David declared: “I will give thanks unto you; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Wonderful are your works; and that my soul knows right well” (Psa. 139:14).

The spirit can experience emotion. In one of his discourses Job declared that “[his] soul grieved for the needy” (Job 30:25)

Daniel cried that: “My spirit was grieved in the midst of my body” (Daniel 7:15).

Jesus said: “Now is my soul troubled” (John. 12:27) as He neared the time of His crucifixion.  “After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”(John 13:21).

It is an obvious fact that human beings are influenced by their surroundings. Social communication is extremely important for human mental, emotional and physical health. It is an extreme form of cruelty to put criminals in total isolation. In Charles Dickens’ book A Tale of Two Cities, Dr. Manette suffered tragically from the years of isolation he was forced to endure as a political prisoner during the French revolution.

I am providing a Christian perspective of the isolation strategy to shut down the spread of Covid-19 around the world. Far more harm is being done to humanity through isolation than is being done by contagion. Chronic isolation increases stress, and inflammation from chronic stress is increasing health issues such as heart, kidney, liver failures. In addition, springing directly from the enforced isolation of individuals in every society is the enforced closing of places of worship. Politically acceptable social activities are not regarded with such rule of might.

One may observe unquestionably that “psychological” theory is unable to benefit man that fails to consider man’s spirit. In modern humanistic “psychology,” none of these matters are considered, and thus the system is unable to help people who need emotional stability. Humanism sees the universe as consisting solely of matter. As far as they are concerned the soul and spirit of man do not exist because they cannot be measured as matter is.
